Note	Azzurra, meaning blue in Italian, is a colour of the flag of Friuli Province where my ‘Trumpet Concerto’ was premiered. It is also where Mr. Ottaviano Cristofoli (Solo trumpet player of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra) who served as a soloist of the concerto was born. ‘Trumpet Concerto’ is a single, fifteen minute movement but it consists of three parts. This ‘Azzurra (Blue Air) corresponds to the second part. In ‘Trumpet Concerto’, this part is played by Flugelhorn. Ottaviano plays a trumpet beautifully, like a singer. Therefore, this melody is in G. Verdi or G. Donizetti style. This being an homage to the great Italian composers. Also of interest is that the name Verdi has the meaning of ‘green’; however this isnt' the reason that I titled this piece ‘Blue’.

Note	The first movement is an extremely fast tempo sonata form in which two trumpets are always intertwined in canon. The second theme of the first movement is a homage of Haydn's trumpet concerto leading directly to the second movement "Passacaglia". Here, the melody of "Chocolate d'Amore" is transformed and quoted in the middle section, and continues to the third movement. The six-eight rhythm of the timpani brings back the first theme of the first movement and the melody of the second movement, which alternate and interact with each other to conclude the piece.

Ottaviano Cristofoli (Japan Philharmonic Orchestra solo trumpet) is from Italy, and Zachary Guiles (former Richmond Symphony Orchestra principal trombone) is from the United States. Their nationalities inspired me to arrange themes from "Madame Butterfly", an opera by G. Puccini which combines elements of American, Italian, and Japanese cultures. In this publication, music develops primarily in the order of the opera story, but ends with the famous love duet from Act 1 so that it does not end in tragedy. In this sheet music, I have included Italian lyrics for the melody sung by Madame Butterfly and Pinkerton. Performers can draw on the text to inform their expression and phrasing. I hope you will enjoy the chance to sing these rich melodies on brass instruments! Recommended to be played on C Trumpet, however, a Bb Trumpet part is also included.
