Utilizing the melody from the central section of Holst’s “The Planets: IV. Jupiter”, I have exclusively written a chorus piece for an event in 1999. Based on that particular
piece, a duo for piano and flute was written the same year. Later, more than a total of 30 renditions were written based on the original piece. This version of "Jupiter", arranged for the large wind band, is one of three parts of a three-part composition, which includes “Mars” and “Earth”, composed in 2003 and 2005 respectively. The trumpet ad lib kicks off the central section, in which various other instruments could repeatedly perform the section, and ad lib is most welcome too. |

I spent my high school days in Hamamatsu studying musical composition, and was fascinated with J. S. Bach’s music at that time. I found pleasure in playing on the piano, Bach’s
chorales and their developed forms, the chorale preludes, and fantasias. With that, I was able to study and appreciate the beautiful architecture of Bach’s music. Some months ago, I conducted a wind band, performing Bach’s Chorale Fantasia, O Mensch, Bewein’ dein’ Snde Gro゚ BWV622 from Little Organ Book, arranged by Percy Grainger, while reminiscing my good old high school days. It came to my realization how long it has been since I came across such sheer beauty in the realm of sound. The chorale has been on my mind, reverberating in my ears since then. At present, the Chubu Japan Air Self-Defense Force Band is celebrating its 25th anniversary. I recall going to one of their concerts during my teenage years, and by calculating the years passed, I realized that could have possibly been their very first concert. It is an honor to be given this splendid opportunity to compose a piece in celebration of such an important occasion. Celebration, I believe, comprises of elements related to prayer. Hence, as a prayer for peace, while also taking pleasure in the memory of my personal life in Hamamatsu, I quoted the entire chorale in this work, aptly describing the words, Oh Man, bewail your great sins. Commissioned by Gral Wind Orchestra for their tenth anniversary. Completed on 25 May 2000 and premiered on 8th July in the same year conducted by Seiji Sagawa. Shortly before I started composing this work, my mother-in-law had passed away and it affected me to write this, unexpectedly, to some extent in the style of requiem. Preceding several years from that, I received from Mr. Nozomu Hayashi a set of verses named Twelve Requiems, on the first of which I composed an unaccompanied choral work, ‘As Time Is Passing On’. It is quoted in the last part of the current work. As Time Is Passing On is for wind band with mixed chorus and consists of the four following parts: Lamento, Marcia, Dies Irae and As Time Passing On. The chorus part can be sung either by the members of the band or by a separate choral group. There are some solo alto passages. As I was asked for something which would have Mr. Sagawa in tears, I deliberately introduced some elements that are reminiscence of Wagner, his favorite composer as I heard. Part 1, Lamanto: Written in a way as a sequel to the choral work ‘As Time Is Passing On’ and the motif derived from it appears symbolically throughout. Pat 2, Marcia: Also based on the same motif as the previous part and partially in the style of Liszt’s symphonic poem, ‘Les p$00E9ludes’. Part 3, Dies Irae: Starting with singing the first verse of liturgical text, Dies Irae (Day of Wrath). It is possible as an option to continue to sing the remaining six stanzas in Latin. Part 4, Time Is Passing On: It begins with mixed chorus in four voices. This section can also be performed solely by wind band with optional organ. Close to the ending, the chorus sing ‘requiem aeternam’ (eternal rest) on the C sharp tonic chord played very softly. This closing also implies the opening of the piece so that it forms a circle with no beginning or ending. As Time Is Passing On by Nozomu Hayashi The morning light on my cheeks Turns into twilight in no time As time is passing on So swiftly and silently I find myself wondered Being alive now and All the things I saw Are for once and only The fresh young leaves of spring Turns into summer foliage in no time As time is passing on So swiftly and drastically I find myself bewildered Having been alive and All the things I saw Are for once and only (This translation is only to show the outline of the original poem in Japanese language.) |

A commissioned work by Mililani High School Band, Hawaii. First performed by the band on March 1st, 2000, at the Pan Pacific Band Festival, held at the city of Hamamatsu of
Shizuoka prefecture, Japan. Dedicated in memory of the men of the 100th Battalion, and the 442nd Infantry Regiment of the United States Army, which was mainly formed by soldiers
of Japanese ancestry. Pertaining to the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese Imperial Navy on 7th December 1941, people of Japanese ancestry were categorized as criminals, with all properties confiscated, and confined to internment camps, facing discrimination and oppression in the US. It was the time for the Japanese Americans, who were born in the US to immigrant parents, to stand up and prove their loyalty to their one and only true home. They responded voluntarily to the military draft, fought bravely as soldiers of the United States Army on the frontlines of Europe. To this day, they serve as the pride of all Japanese Americans. One cannot imagine the indescribable feeling experienced by these soldiers, loyal to America at heart, but connected by blood to Japan. This symphonic poem, aims to illustrate the state of mind and emotions felt by them. The title is derived from the motto of the 442nd Infantry Regiment, “Go For Broke”. On another note, Internet searches with “100 442” as keywords return with numerous results associated with this particular piece of history. In conjunction with the marking of the 70th year of the end of World War II, may this piece also serve as a call to know the truths of war, and above all, a chance to understand the race problem. |

Composed for the National Athletic Meet in Toyama prefecture in 2000. It includs a taste of folk tune of Toyama. Kokiriko is the Japanese traditional percussion instrument, which is a pair of bamboo sticks length about 25cm and 2 to 3 cm in diameter, and played like Claves (rarely available in music store even in Japan. Could make it by yourself, but actually Kokirio has its own special process to make.) So Claves could be the replacement. In this piece, there are two more traditional percussions like Bohzasara and Zasara. Bohzasara also called as Surizasara has two different types of sticks. One is about 30cm length of wooden stick indented called Sasarako, and the other is almost same size and called Sasaradake. The top part of Sasaradake is split into thinner tips. Holding Sasaradake with right hand and rub Sasarako by left hand. No western instruments can be founded such kind of percussion, so I recommend using Guiro. Sasara also called Binzasara has 108 wooden cards (108 is very important number in the Buddhism.) joined and tied up at the top of those wooden cards. With handles both ends of the wooden cards, sound is caused when those woods strike together. Large Guiro could be substitute. Doubling these percussions to the band, you will taste the real flavor of Japanese. |

In the past few years, Ito has been writing vocal music, becoming aware of the beauty of the Japanese language. He thought of applying this to band music, and this piece was born.
What is "Symphony"? What is "contemporary music"? What is the difference between popular music and serious music? This work is his answer to all these questions. La Sinfonia means
"The Symphony". Una Poeta, quoted from his own vocal music, is "A Poet". "La Vita" has a different nuance from the English word "the life". What the music expresses is, as Arthur
Rimbaud says, "Ma vie etait le festin". |

A so-called “classical suite”, such as J.S Bach’s well-known French Suites, BWV 812-817 and Partitas, BWV 825-830 can be simply considered as a collection of dance pieces. Dances
that were popular during a composer’s time, or old ones no-longer danced were integrated altogether as one piece. It can also be considered as a form of a variation using the same
tonality or sharing a similar theme. As for this “A la Suite Classique (Classic Suite)”, I would say, is a modernized version of a similar concept which includes some newer
dances, or a parody of an old form. It comes along as some sort of a brand-new piece that bears an antique taste to it. The allemande is a German duple meter dance with its roots spanning from the 16th till the beginning of the 17th century. By combining a little tango rhythm, the 1st movement is light and melodic, with a smooth going melody, and a stimulating experience with the irregular meter. The sarabande is a slow dance in triple meter, and originated from 17th $2013 18th century Europe. The 2nd movement is a sarabande combined with the chordal system of a chaconne. It begins ponderously but steadily develops into something with a little “pop” flavor. The gavotte is a French dance written in 2/2 or 4/4, with a moderate tempo, and is recognized for its half-measure upbeat feature. The 3rd movement is a gavotte, with a habanera rhythm to it. One can savor the tones unique to a wind ensemble with this light orchestration, and the intrigue of an unanticipated transposition in this movement. The gigue is a lively British dance originating from 16th century. The 4th movement is a dance in 6/8 meter combining the gigue with the Spanish zapateado, with the occasional travesty in a lively rhythm. “A la suite” in the title is defined as “in the form of a classic suite”, but “a la suite” can also be defined with a nuance - “in classic form one after another”. This piece was originally composed in January 1995, under the request of the Euphonium Company , for 4 euphoniums and an accordion, and arranged for a piano duet soon after (both are yet to be published). It initially comprises seven movements, but has been compressed into four for this arrangement for the wind ensemble. The Festival Wind Orchestra conducted by the composer himself, premiered this wind orchestra rendition at the California Institute of Technology Band Festival (21 April 1996). This composition is considerably light-hearted, unique to the characteristics of a small ensemble, as it was composed then for a small wind ensemble. |

This piece was commissioned by the Alumni Association of Hamamatsu-Kita High School in Shizuoka ( The composer was a student there.), for its 100th anniversary of foundation. The
piece was not intended to recall his good old memories of his high school days, but to express his positive attitude to the future. The title of the second movement "Remembrance"
and "Farewell" account for that. In the second movement, he tries microtonal melodies without rhythms. To be published by Ludwig. |

Ito has long wanted to write an opera, and has been writing many vocal works. When he wrote this piece in 1991, he was vaguely thinking about an opera. The title derivers from his
1986 work Prelude to an Unfinished Opera, commissioned by the Tsukuba University Band, for which he had been conducting for a long time. When he wrote the piece, he had just
finished graduate school, and he wa pondering his future as a professional composer. The piece was composed for his next step. As Richard Strauss did in Ein Heldenlaben ("A hero's
life"), Ito quotes many melodies from his band works, such as Progress (1979), Evocation (1982), Sinfonia (1985). Commissioned by the Sapporo Wind Band, for its twentieth anniversary of foundation. Published by BRAIN. |

This work, commissioned by the Tokyo Kosei wind orchestra, was first performanced as its 47th regular concert in Tokyo, with Hiroyuki Odano conducting, in 1990. Its first recorded
performance is the one on this CD.Symphony consists of three movements, eextreamly short, presents the entire essence of the work; the second, althogh the most important part of
the symphony, demonstrates a concept that is far removed from the view that in the classical symphony the theme is usually developed inthe second movement ;and the third movement, which again is very short, quickly concludes the work.. |

Christianity was introduced into Japan in mid sixteenth century. It consequently brought a variety of western music. While Christianity was forbidden by the Tokugawa Shogunate,
there were Christians called "Hidden Christians", who tried to advocate sermons and secret songs. In those songs, sad to say, melodies and lyrics like those of the Gregorian
Chants were obliged to be "Japanized". For example, the Latin word "gloriosa" was changed to "gururiyoza". The difference between the "Japanized" melodies and the original ones
induced Ito to write this piece, with which to solve the mystery. The first movement consists of variations on a Gregorian Chant which was introduced to Japan in those days. The
second movement is Sanjuan sama no uta ("song of Saint Juan") sung by Hidden Christians. The third movement is based on Nagasaki Bura-bura Bushi, a folk song of the Nagasaki
district, where many hidden Christians lived. Commissioned by the Sasebo Band of Japan Maritime Self Defence Force. Published by ONGAKU NO TOMO SHA. |

Information | Available for the pf (Only for the first movement).Available for the orchestra virsion. This is written in the form of wind ensemble,so basically each part of 3BbClarinets,2euphonium and 2 tubas.percussion needs to have 4 players including the timpanist (see the example of setting the percussion). So this piece can be performed by 38 players at a minimum.Actually, however, it happens that plural players perform one part. If so, please be careful about balancing. |

An opening percussion passage leads into a saxophone cadenza designed to display the soloist's technical skill. As the cadenza soars to a peak the ensemble makes a dynamic
entrance. The contrast between the rhythmic music of the ensemble and the drawn-out notes of the saxophone brings the opening section to a climax.. This is followed by a quieter piu mosso section featuring woodwinds and saxophone, then the saxophone playing against the ensemble. Next there is anoter saxophone cadenza backed by muted trumpets and climaxed by an emphatic statement by the percussion. After a brief return to piu mosso and contrastive sections a rhythmic section backed by the percussion begins, the saxophone playing sometimes swith the ensemble and sometimes against it, and sometimes improvissing.. The final section incorporates jazz elements. Following a sustained Bb chord, the concerto closes with a cadenza accompanied by percussion instruments improvising in the style of traditional Japanese music. [Subliminal Festa KOCD-0401] |
