Preface "Accompanied" unaccompanied Bach Even in an unaccompanied solo piece, there are always underlying harmonies and one needs to be aware of this when performing. Therefore, when I teach my students, I have provided accompaniments to Bach's unaccompanied works. I have now decided to publish this accompanied version as I think it would be useful for music students in general. Here I present Bach's Partita for unaccompanied flute with continuo realization which can be also be performed as concert repertoire. I have attempted to emulate Bach's harmonic style by imaging how he would have accompanied these works if had been asked to. Some may object to the choice of certain harmonies, but the whole point of this publication is to increase interest in performing with a strong sense of harmony through such a process. Furthermore, in Bach's unaccompanied works, there are often multiple voices within a single part. So I have also provided a "duet version" which will help clarify the flow of the voices. I hope that students will perform this with friends or with their teachers, and enjoy and learn at the same time. February 2017 Ito, Yasuhide |

Azzurra, meaning blue in Italian, is a colour of the flag of Friuli Province where my ‘Trumpet Concerto’ was premiered. It is also where Mr. Ottaviano Cristofoli (Solo trumpet player of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra) who served as a soloist of the concerto was born. ‘Trumpet Concerto’ is a single, fifteen minute movement but it consists of three parts. This ‘Azzurra (Blue Air) corresponds to the second part. In ‘Trumpet Concerto’, this part is played by Flugelhorn. Ottaviano plays a trumpet beautifully, like a singer. Therefore, this melody is in G. Verdi or G. Donizetti style. This being an homage to the great Italian composers. Also of interest is that the name Verdi has the meaning of ‘green’; however this isnt' the reason that I titled this piece ‘Blue’. |

Program Notes from the Premiere It was in late 2014 when oboist Kazuhiro Miyamura approached me in earnest and commissioned me to compose an oboe sonata that was "tonal, without quotations, and in the lineage of Saint=sa$00EBns and Poulenc". Traditionally, the "sonata", especially in chamber music, has always been an important genre in which a composer would demonstrate his skills. Equally, it has been an important repertoire for instrumentalists. However, in today's rapidly-changing world , how much demand is there for the sonata? These days, people prefer lighter music, film or theatre-type music, or even "video game music" -style works and music accompanied by video. Personally, I consider that Western music is an art where a given length of time is constructed purely by sounds, and this rich world cannot be discussed without the "sonata". This single-movement oboe sonata, which lasts a little over 13 minutes, has a multi-layered structure: it is constructed in large-scale sonata form but also includes a scherzo, slow movement and a fugal rondo within the movement. Everything derives from the opening oboe melody. All the melodies that appear in this work are quite ordinary, but the trick is that they appear first in developed (or variation) form and only later do they appear in complete form. There is one quotation at the very end - from my own song. This means that the sonata is in fact heading towards this song. |
