This 2017 edition can be considered the completed version, preceded by a version arranged in the year 1988, which featured only extracts from the original Bach piece. A great number of composers have arranged the “Chaconne”$2014the final movement of J.S. Bach’s “Partita in D minor for solo violin, BWV 1004” into various renditions. Some well-known ones include J. Brahms’ (1833-1897) Piano for the Left-Hand, Hideo Saito’s (1902-1974) orchestral arrangement, and in particular, F. Busoni’s piano arrangement has recreated Bach in a hugely dynamic way. As far as these “arrangements” go, they were newly devised creations, while retaining the essence of the original. Hence, leading to an attractive idea for me to create an arrangement that hails the colorful attributes of a wind ensemble. The idea of using the trombone ensemble as the introduction of the piece was put forward by Kenichi Watanabe, an esteemed friend of mine. It inspired me to orchestrate the entire work utilizing, to some extent, Schoenberg’s Klangfarbenmelodie (sound-color melody) with reference to Busoni’s arrangement. Moreover, this piece is created based on the golden ratio: the ratio between the minor and major in the beginning, the ratio between the major and minor part at the end, all contemplated to be close to the golden ratio (with the part leading to the major being almost half). In comparison, various parts in the 1988 edition were created shortened, in relation to the golden ratio. It featured a total count of 34 four-bar units. The original features 64. This 2017 edition, being a “complete” version in my terms, actually features 61, still shorter than the original. A D Minor [1]$2013[31](31 counts) [1]$2013-[19](19)* [20]$2013[31](12) B D Major [32]$2013[49](18) [32]$2013[42](11)* [43]$2013[49](7) A D Minor [50]$2013[61](12) [51]$2013[57](7) [58]$2013[61](4)* *Almost similar to the 1988 edition This piece, including the original Bach piece, tends to be performed with a slightly heavy tempo. However, Chaconne is originally dance music, and should be performed with a rather light tempo, hence the simplified design for the tempo of this piece. The instrumentation is also similar to the 1988 edition, other than the addition of the contrabass clarinet. This piece was first performed on 22 June 2017 at Senzoku Gakuen Maeda Hall, by the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music Green-Tie Wind Ensemble, conducted by Sachio Fujioka. |

Antiche Danze ed Arie per Liuto Libera trascrizione per orchestra di fiatti Interpretazione Orchestrale di ITO YASUHIDE Commissioned by Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. Premiered on 28th January 2017 under the baton of Shizuo “Z” Kuwahara. Following is a revised description of the program used in the premiere. O. Respighi (1879-1936) was a diligent researcher on Baroque and Classical music, resulting in works including arrangements of J.S. Bach’s (1685-1750) orchestral works, a song “Sopra un’aria antica” which was written based on an old Italian song “Intorno all’idol mio” by M. Cesti (1620-1669) and “La Boutique fantasque” and “Rossiniana” inspired by G. Rossini (1792-1868) of a slightly later era. As such, Respighi’s works always has a nostalgic taste to them. Antiche Danze ed Arie per Liuto (Ancient Airs and Dances) is a set of three orchestral suites by Respighi and today, the Suite No. 3 (composed in 1931) will be performed. It comprises the following four pieces. The first, third, and fourth have been arranged by the composer for the solo piano as well. 1. Anonymous $2013 Italiana (Late 16th century) 2. Jean-Baptiste Besard $2013 Arie di corte (16th century) Besard (1567-1625) was a French lutenist, composer and doctor. 3. Anonymous $2013 Siciliana (Late 16th century) This melody is familiar to the Japanese public as it is used in the media often. It originated from “Spagnoletta”, a popular piece in England and Italy from the 16th century. It is in “The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book” as No. 289 “The Old Spagnoletta” by Giles Farnaby (1560-1640). 4. Lodovico Roncalli $2013 Passacaglia (1692) Passacaglia adapted from the 9th suite of “Capricci armonici sopra la chitarra spagnola (‘Harmonic caprices for the Spanish guitar’)” by Lodovico Roncalli, an Italian noble and guitarist. As this is an arrangement rendered for the wind orchestra, I duly changed the title from the original, “Antiche Danze ed Arie per Liuto, Libera trascrizione per orchestra d’archi [string orchestra], Terzo Suite”, into “Antiche Danze ed Arie per Liuto, Libera trascrizione per orchestra$00A0di fiatti [wind orchestra], Terzo Suite”.$00A0 So very often, orchestral arrangements are being arranged into pieces for the wind orchestra, a notion I am personally not fond of, as this concept is mainly based on how the wind orchestra can simulate the sounds of a string orchestra, making the arrangement seem like a “substitute” for the original. An “arrangement”, in my personal opinion, has to be a “re-creation”, and seemingly more attractive than the original. Hence, my preference in arranging pieces from various types of compositions other than orchestral pieces, such as violin and piano solo pieces. While doing so, I would inject some of my own expression, from ideas on how I would perform this piece myself on the piano, drawing a totally different form of attractiveness, and associating the original piece with the charm of the sounds of a wind orchestra. This piece was originally for the lute, but Respighi has expanded its reach throughout the world with an orchestral rendition. In arranging this piece for the wind orchestra, I can only imagine the possibilities it can achieve. It would be my humble pleasure as the arranger, if this piece can reach fans of orchestral music and wind instrument players, promoting their enthusiasm towards wind orchestra music. Especially for this piece on this day, one can only be eager for the opportunity to take in the various alluring tone and sounds produced by the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, a color palette of prime quality. |

Chaconne from Partita No. 2 for Solo Violin in D minor, BWV1004 by Bach Originally a piece for the solo violin, Ferruccio Busoni has arranged this piece for the piano, so well it fully utilizes the piano’s characteristics and seems like a composition of his own. As for my arrangement though, I sought sounds unique only to the wind band instead, sounds unattainable with a piano or an orchestra. It might be interesting to relate this rendition to its original form, an ancient Spanish dance, rather than to the original composition by Bach, which features the solo violin. The rich sound, sometimes comparable to an organ’s, and the variety of tone colors produced by the wind band, are some aspects to look out for through this arrangement. The chaconne starts with a beautiful harmony featuring three trombones, having been inspired by a friend’s suggestion. Although this arrangement is abbreviated to about half the length of the original, I retained, however, the balance of the three sections, D minor$2013D major$2013D minor, in the golden ratio, similar to the original. ITO Yasuhide (Program for the premiere in 1987) Chaconne is a form of ancient dance, one of many variations. Bach adopted the form and transformed it into a grand ten-minute masterpiece that features a solo violin. This work has seemingly inspired many composers after him. Brahms and Busoni, for example, have arranged the piece for the piano. There are also arrangements for string orchestras. This summer, I myself have written an arrangement featuring the saxophone, too. This rendition for the wind band was originally written in 1987. A friend had suggested that I could start the piece with three trombones, which gave me enough inspiration to go about the process then. At that time, as I had particular interest in Schnberg’s Klangfarbenmelodie (melody of tone colors), I have applied intricate details to the orchestration of this piece. While this arrangement was abbreviated to a little more than 60 percent of its original length, its golden ratio construction is being retained.
